OpenLimit registers Bürgerclient for certification
BSI confirms the registration at the CeBIT
OpenLimit officially applied for the certification of Bügerclient at
the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). At the IT trade fair CeBIT in
Hanover, Bernd Kowalski, head of department for certification, registration, conformity
checks and new technologies of the BSI, handed over the confirmation letter about the
receipt of the certification application to Marc Gurov, CEO of OpenLimit, yesterday. “We’re
very pleased to have been able to register the Bürgerclient for the certification. So for now
we’re proceeding on schedule,” said Gurov during the handover.
Secure online identification with the help of Bürgerclient
The Bürgerclient is the application software for the new identity card which will be issued
from November 1st, 2010. With the help of this program card holders can securely and
unequivocally identify themselves in the future. Furthermore, the software enables users to
make use of the electronic signature and the encryption. Registry offices will provide the
Bürgerclient as free download from November on. OpenLimit has been developing the
Bürgerclient as subcontractor of Siemens IT Solutions and Services, the general contractor
of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). Siemens is responsible for the entire
architecture of the new authentication solutions.
Evaluation in accordance with strict security standards
It is of the highest importance for the BMI that users installing the Bürgerclient on their
computers can trust the software. Therefore the tender for the Bürgerclient has determined
that the software should fulfill the highest degree of international security requirements.
From now on, the software will thus be evaluated and certified in accordance with the
guidelines of the international security catalog Common Criteria as well as it will be verified
in accordance with the guidelines of the Signature Law. In addition to the technical
evaluation, the software will also undergo an extensive conformity check in terms of
usability and accessibility.
